A gay American teenager who was suspended for using nail polish made a petition against his school’s “homophobic and sexist” dress code, according to the Pink News website.

Trevor Wilkinson, 17, a senior at Clyde High School in Texas, was punished after he returned from Thanksgiving with his nails painted.

School officials told him that he broke the dress code that prohibits nail colors for male students – and only for male students.

“Imagine your school not allowing boys to paint their nails and giving boys a, [uma suspension escolar] for that”, he tweeted. “And the whole administration is fine with that, homophobic and sexist? Welcome to West Texas.”

Wilkinson had the opportunity to remove the paint, but declined, arguing that the punishment is a “complete double pattern because girls are allowed to paint and do their nails”.

But the school stubbornly refused to back down, saying the teenager would not be allowed to return unless he removed the nail polish.

Wilkinson highlighted hypocrisy in a petition that requires the dress code to be changed. It was signed by more than 51,000 people in less than a week.

“I am a gay man and I am proud. This is unfair and it is not right ”, he declared. “Help me show that it is okay to express yourself and that the identity that society wants to normalize is not acceptable.”

“I’m a human. I’m valid. I shouldn’t have any problems getting my nails done. Sign and share this so people like me don’t have to deal with it again. It’s time to change and this time is now.”

The Clyde school district declined to comment on the Wilkinson incident, but said in a statement on Friday (4) that it “conducts a diligent and careful review” of its dress code policy annually.
