On this March 24, Pope Francis appointed LGBTQIA+ activist, Juan Carlos Cruz, to lead a commission against abuses committed by the clergy in the Vatican. Cruz himself was a victim of pedophile priest Fernando Karadima during his childhood, and this case was made public in 2018 when Karadima’s clerical status was revoked.

The Holy See press reports that Juan will be part of the Pontifical Commission for the Guardianship of Minors for the next three years. The aim is to discuss measures to combat pedophilia in the Catholic Church. In addition to Juan, the Brazilian and founder of the Fazenda da Esperança community in Guaratinguetá (SP), Nelson Giovaneneli, is also part of the committee.

Cruz says that his first accusations were discredited by the Catholic Church, but that Pope Francis did and would have said: “Juan Carlos, the fact that you are gay does not matter. God made you like that. This renews my commitment to continue working to end the scourge of abuse and by so many survivors who have not yet obtained justice”, said Cruz on Twitter.

Bishop says the Catholic Church urgently needs to review its concepts of sexuality

The head bishop of the diocese of Essen, Germany, Dom Franz-Josef Overbeck, contradicted the decision of the Vatican, which was endorsed by the pope, in denying the granting of blessings to homo-affective unions. The information is from UOL Notícias.

According to Overbeck, in letters to all parishes in the diocese, the doctrine of the Catholic Church “urgently demands a broader perspective on human sexuality”.

In addition, he invited all Catholics not to succumb to “fundamentalist temptations” and said that “people with a homosexual orientation are offended and hurt” by the Congregation’s disposition to the Doctrine of the Faith.

“The assessment of homosexuality based on natural law is no longer understood or accepted. Furthermore, the numerous public signs coming from parishes and above all from many pastoral agents today express an open rejection of the posição [do Vaticano] position that can no longer be ignored “, says the text.

German bishop understands that “homosexual Christians must remain attached to our church because, as baptized, they are part of it”, and that “the blessing is a sign of accompaniment and must show that, through the Church, God is present in the relationship”.

The Vatican announced on March 15 that priests and ministers of the Catholic Church cannot bless homoaffective unity because “God cannot bless sin”.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) issued the decision in response to questions sent by parishes that expressed a desire to grant blessings as a sign of welcome to homosexuals.

The argument was that heterosexual marriage is a sacrament and cannot be extended to same-sex couples.

“For this reason, it is not lawful to give blessings to relationships, or to stable partnerships, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage (that is, outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman, open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case with same-sex unions “, says the note.
