“I’m gay, it’s part of me and I’m proud of it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Hig Roberts<\/strong> officially declared himself gay in a new in-depth interview for The New York Times<\/em>, according to the Gay Times<\/a> website. The United States ski champion opened up about his journey and what inspired him to take over.<\/p>\n

“Not being able to be who I am and not being openly gay as a professional athlete was really hampering my performance”,<\/em> said Roberts The 29-year-old athlete became the first male alpine skier of his caliber to come out publicly as a gay man.<\/p>\n

Roberts expressed that the hyper-masculine environment of the sport prevented him from manifesting, stating: “There is this idea that being a professional skier in Europe you are attracting the attention of women and you are almost a little bigger than life.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking of the exact moment that triggered his decision, he said that he just “woke up one morning and said ‘Enough.'”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI love this sport more than anything – I’m so lucky and privileged to do that – but I can’t go another day without trying to reach the person I should be. I think that for each of us, one of the main goals must be happiness and authenticity \u201d<\/em>, he continued.<\/p>\n

Roberts is now part of the growing community of LGBTQ+ athletes that includes Gus Kenworthy, Adam Rippon, Anja P\u00e4rson, Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird<\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n

Looking to the future, Roberts is ready to take on the world and live his life freely, saying: “I’m gay, it’s part of me and I’m proud of it, and I’m ready to be happy”.<\/em><\/p>\n
