Faced with “worrying trends” of homophobia, the European Commission presented, on Thursday (12), a plan to combat discrimination and hatred against LGBT+ people. The aim is to strengthen the rights of same-sex couples, reports AFP<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to a 2019 survey conducted by the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency, discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity has increased in the EU: 43% of LGBT+ people say they feel discriminated<\/a>, compared with 37% in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeing progress in some member states. For example, many legally recognize same-sex couples<\/em>\u201d, said Commission Vice President Vera Jourova<\/strong> at a news conference.<\/p>\n

The European Commission will propose mutual recognition between Member States of parental rights for same-sex couples.<\/p>\n

“It is not acceptable for your child to stop being your child when you cross the border”<\/em>, Vera Jourova told the agency.<\/p>\n

She said that 21 member states recognize a form of same-sex unity and that only a part of them recognize the possibility of adopting a child for these couples.<\/p>\n

European legislation for the mutual recognition of parental rights would, however, require the unanimity of the Member States.<\/p>\n

The European Executive also wants to harden the fight against hate speech and crimes against the LGBT community, proposing that measures be specifically provided for in the treaties. Such inclusion could then lead Member States to an obligation to punish these crimes.<\/p>\n

European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli<\/strong>, also condemned the so-called \u201cconversion therapies\u201d, which aim to change the sexual orientation of LGBT people.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody needs to be corrected. Conversion practices must stop\u201d<\/em>, she told AFP during the presentation of this strategy, the first European initiative of its kind.<\/p>\n
