The marriage of Hungarian transgender people Tamara Csillag<\/strong> and Elvira Angyal<\/strong> looked like any other, but in the world of nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban<\/strong>, that was special, reports Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Orban, increasingly hostile to LGBT+ people, has banned legal recognition of transgender identity in Hungary. Ironically, this made marriage possible, as Csillag was stuck with male documents, while Angyal had already completed his transition and had the documents to prove it.<\/p>\n

“Our dream has come true. We are very happy to have received an official seal about our relationship”<\/em>, said Angyal after the ceremony, hand in hand with his new wife, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

She kissed her and said, “I love you.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“I love you back”<\/em>, said Csillag.<\/p>\n

Theirs was far from a smooth journey. Both had families like men before leaving to live as women. Of seven children among them, only one, Angyal’s son, Patrik<\/strong>, was present.<\/p>\n

“One of the greatest joys in life is seeing your parents happy”, said Patrik.<\/p>\n

Rights groups say Orban and his political allies, the small Christian Democratic party KDNP, have been targeting the gay community since he won a third term in 2018.<\/p>\n

“For a decade, the government has been waging a systematic campaign against the LGBTQ people”, said Luca Dudits<\/strong>,of the Hatter rights group. “This contradicts European standards and human rights in general.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The wedding took place the day after Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen<\/strong> renewed homophobic attacks with a proposal to enshrine in the country’s constitution the ban on “gender propaganda”.<\/p>\n

“They should not be called family, because that is a sacred notion”, said Semjen. “They should not adopt children, because children’s right to healthy development is stronger than the need for a child by homosexual couples.”<\/em><\/p>\n
