Democrats Ritchie Torres<\/strong> and Mondaire Jones<\/strong> became the first gay and black men to be elected to the United States Congress from New York State.<\/p>\n

“A new era begins for the South Bronx”<\/em>, said Torres. “It is the greatest honor of a lifetime to represent a neighborhood filled with essential workers who risked their lives so that New York City could live”<\/em>, she added.<\/p>\n

“The scourge of Covid-19 has revealed the inequalities that have long been allowed to worsen in our communities. The destruction our neighborhoods have suffered is severe, with a pandemic caused by an economic disaster and a recovery that helps only those who are in the top, not bottom”<\/em>, said Torres.<\/p>\n

Mondaire Jones<\/strong> was elected to represent the 17th district, which covers Westchester and Rockland.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ candidates surfed a rainbow wave and won victories in the United States elections, as initial results indicate a series of historic achievements, including that of Sarah McBride<\/strong><\/a>, who became the first openly transgender person to win a seat in a Senate state.<\/p>\n

As of Wednesday morning, it was estimated that at least 35 of the record 574 LGBT+ candidates in the race won, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n

A National Election Pool poll by Edison Research indicates that LGBT+ voters represent 7% of the 2020 electorate, more than the estimated 4.5% of the adult population.<\/p>\n

“Tonight’s victory for LGBTQ people of color and American transgender people across the country is historic and hard to come by”<\/em>, Sarah Kate Ellis, president of the LGBT+ Glaad rights organization, said in a statement, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n

“His victories represent a leap forward for LGBTQ acceptance and a demand for more of the progress and equality that his own presence demonstrates.”<\/em><\/p>\n
