Idris Elba, Naomi Campbell<\/strong> and other prominent figures signed an open letter in support of the gay community in conflict with Ghana after an LGBTQIA+ center was closed by the police.<\/p>\n

A total of 67 celebrities, politicians and other influential figures condemned the crackdown on the LGBTQIA+ community in Ghana in the open letter, published by The Guardian, according to the Pink News<\/a> website.<\/p>\n

The letter, which was also signed by Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful<\/strong>, expressed dismay at the treatment of LGBTQIA+ rights in Ghana, which opened its office in the African country on 31 January. The center was the target of furious public reaction and ended up being forcibly closed by national security officials on Wednesday (February 24).<\/p>\n

“We watched with deep concern when you had to question the safety of your vital work at the LGBT+ Rights Ghana Center in Accra, and we fear for your well-being and personal safety”<\/em>, says the letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unacceptable for us that you feel insecure. As prominent and powerful defenders of this great country, we implore your excellence, the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and political \/ cultural leaders to create a path for allies, protection and support. We ask for inclusion that will make the nation even bigger and stronger “.<\/em><\/p>\n

Black Lives Matter<\/a> UK also supported the LGBTQIA + community in Ghana and attacked the state’s “aggressive”<\/em> response to the opening of an LGBTQIA+ center.<\/p>\n

“We are with all oppressed queer and transgender people across Africa and the world”,<\/em> said Black Lives Matter UK in a statement.<\/p>\n
