The Vatican announced on March 15 that priests and ministers of the Catholic Church cannot bless<\/strong> same-sex unions. According to the note released with the endorsement of Pope Francis, “God cannot bless sin”<\/em>. The information is from Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) issued the decision in response to questions sent by parishes that expressed a desire to grant blessings as a sign of welcome<\/strong> to homosexuals.<\/p>\n

The CDF<\/strong> recognized the request as a “sincere desire to welcome and accompany homosexuals”<\/em> and to help them grow in the faith. The agency also said that the decision “is not intended to be a form of unfair discrimination, but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite”.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, the CDF also claims that heterosexual marriage is a sacrament<\/strong> and cannot be extended to same-sex couples.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this reason, it is not lawful to give blessings to relationships, or to stable partnerships, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage (that is, outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman, open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case with same-sex unions “<\/em>, says the note.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the pope has already expressed his support for legal protections for gay unions, but only related to the civil sphere<\/strong>. In 2019, he told Mexican broadcaster Televisa (via DW<\/a>) that “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family, they are daughters of God”.<\/p>\n

As for families with gay children<\/strong>, Francisco commented “You cannot expel someone from a family, nor make your life miserable, for that reason. We must have a law of civil union: in this way, they are legally guaranteed.”<\/em><\/p>\n
