Residents of the Amaralina<\/strong> community, in Salvador, Bahia, decided to paint the traditional staircase of Avenida Edna with the colors of the rainbow to make reference to the LGBTQIA+ flag.<\/p>\n

The initiative took place on the 11th of October due to the idea of the snack maker Sidneia Ferreira Santana<\/strong> (43) to honor her gay son Igor Leonardo de Santana Torres (24), who has a bachelor’s degree in Gender and Diversity Studies.<\/p>\n

Igor will present the course conclusion paper (TCC) “Conflicts and Political Action in LGBTQ Movements<\/strong>” by the Federal University of Bahia, UFBA. The student spent six months in Canada to compare the LGBTQIA+ movement in Montreal with Salvador.<\/p>\n

“I am very happy with it all”<\/em> – said Igor<\/strong> (via Mail 24 Hours<\/a>) – “I hope that other young people also achieve their goals, that each step of this color symbolizes the ladder of each one’s dreams”.<\/em><\/p>\n

The idea of Igor’s mother was supported by neighbors, who number more than 17 families.<\/p>\n

“The staircase had just been renovated”<\/em> – says Sidneia<\/strong>, Igor’s mother – “but it was lifeless, gray, the color of cement. So, I had the idea of adding colors and, since everyone here is united, each one contributed with what they could. I am still taking paint off the body”.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sidneia<\/strong> is also keen to emphasize that her only son is also a source of pride for her: “He is everything to me. I thank God every day for having the privilege of being his mother”.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the neighbors, Adilson Andrade<\/strong> (54), is a DJ and packed the painting with music from different genres: “First I started with some gospel songs to open the paths. Then it was to the customer’s taste: lambada, sizzle, samba, reggae and so on”<\/em> – he said.<\/p>\n

Painting on the community’s staircases started at 6 am and ended at 7 pm. Those who did not paint the stairs were responsible for feeding those who did. Igor will present his TCC on November 3 and will have the guidance of anthropologist and professor Felipe Bruno Martins Fernandes<\/strong>.
