The release of “I Am Going to Miss You”<\/a><\/strong>, the new feature film by Daniel Ribeiro<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, retrospectively organizes a narrative trajectory that began more than a decade ago with “The Way He Looks”.<\/a><\/strong> Alongside “13 Sentiments”<\/a><\/strong>, released in 2024, the film forms part of a trilogy that, although conceived outside chronological order, is structured as a coherent body of work on different stages of affective relationships.<\/p>\n

The connection between the three titles is not established through continuity of characters or plot, but through a thematic investigation that spans different moments of the romantic experience. While the first feature focuses on the discovery of desire and the construction of autonomy, the subsequent works shift the focus to less idealized territories, such as emotional instability, wear and tear, and the possibility of rupture.<\/p>\n

The director himself delineates this shift by stating: \u201cAfter ‘The Way He Looks’, I developed two other stories that explore the wear and tear of a couple, the imminence of separation, and the process of rediscovery after the end of a long relationship. Together, these three works form a trilogy that portrays the full cycle of human relationships\u201d. He then adds: \u201cBut, on second thought, love and relationships rarely follow a logical path, so I like the idea that the course of life has shuffled the order of this story\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n

In the new film, starring Alice Marcone<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong> and Gabriel Lodi<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the narrative follows a trans couple who have been in a relationship for seven years and begin to face a crisis after deciding to move in together. The decision, which might traditionally be associated with the consolidation of the relationship, here functions as a source of tension, exposing accumulated differences and irreconcilable expectations.<\/p>\n

In this context, everyday coexistence ceases to function as a natural continuation of the bond and instead acts as a catalyst for conflict, especially regarding the negotiation of individual space, the persistence of desire, and the redefinition of shared plans. The screenplay, written by Ribeiro in collaboration with Marcone, emphasizes this relational dimension without resorting to external dramatic devices, focusing instead on the couple\u2019s internal dynamics.<\/p>\n

The decision to cast an ensemble composed entirely of trans actors<\/a> places the film within a representational framework that seeks to reduce the gap between lived experience and fictional construction. The film\u2019s international run begins at the BFI Flare London LGBTQ+ Film Festival<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, with screenings scheduled for Thursday, March 27, and Friday, March 28. It will then be part of the program at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in April<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ribeiro\u2019s trajectory in Brazilian audiovisual began with short films, with titles screened at more than a hundred international festivals and awarded in different contexts. His transition to feature filmmaking came with “The Way He Looks”<\/strong>, presented at the Berlin Film Festival<\/span><\/span>, where it received the Teddy Award and the International Critics\u2019 Prize, and was also selected as Brazil\u2019s entry in the race for a nomination at the 2015 Oscars.<\/p>\n

“The Way He Looks” as a comic book<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

Alongside the film\u2019s release, Daniel Ribeiro returns to the starting point of his cinematic trajectory by adapting “The Way He Looks” <\/a><\/strong>into a comic book<\/strong>. The publication, scheduled for April by the Seguinte imprint of Grupo Companhia das Letras, is based on the film\u2019s original screenplay and is written by the director himself, with illustrations by Bruno Freire. The comic is already available for pre-order on Amazon<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The shift to the graphic format allows for the expansion of situations and atmospheres that, in cinema, were constrained by duration and the limits of staging. \u201cI\u2019ve always felt the desire to continue exploring Leo and Gabriel\u2019s story beyond the film. The comic book emerged as the perfect solution\u2014a format that allows me to expand this universe without the physical limitations of time\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Ribeiro says. According to him, the initiative also opens room for future developments: \u201cWhat\u2019s most interesting is that, in the future, when the characters finally reach the actors\u2019 current age, the door will be open for a new film. It would be incredible to revisit Leo and Gabriel in adulthood and understand what their conflicts are today\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
