We\u2019re experiencing very challenging times, but it\u2019s important to think: when all this is over, what would have changed for the better inside of you?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no denying that 2020 has been extremely atypical for all of us. Everything started with the COVID-19 pandemic, which for many meant losing loved ones, their jobs or their own businesses. Then, we heard about George Floyd\u2019s death, and he was added to the long list of black people who lost their lives in the United States due to racism \u2013 an event that triggered rampage protests all around the world. Then came the heat waves that caused devastating wildfires in California, where I live.<\/p>\n

Given all that, many would say that it\u2019s been a terrible year so far. For me, the (literally) most suffocating moment of this pandemic brought a different outlook on everything that is happening, and made me think that these challenging times can also bring positive reflections to our lives.<\/p>\n

This turning point happened on a day that seemed like it had started just like any other. As usual, I woke up with my alarm going off. But when I opened my eyes, I noticed my bedroom was still pitch black. I thought I had set the alarm for the wrong time, and it was still the middle of the night. When I looked at the time, I was shocked: it was 9am!<\/p>\n

I opened the curtains and it was also pitch black outside. It was as if day had turned into night. It seemed like the apocalypse: gigantic smoke clouds from the wildfires were looming over San Francisco, turning the sky orange, making it look like Mars, as we see in the sci-fi movies. . At that time, the fires were taking over the entire West Coast of the United States, all the way to Canada. Millions of acres were burned down, as it was hard to contain the fire in a dry and very windy weather.<\/p>\n

In the city, the air pollution was so intense that the cars on the streets were covered with ashes. We couldn\u2019t go outside, as we couldn\u2019t breathe that air. Here in San Francisco, houses don\u2019t often have air-conditioning systems because of the climate, so imagine what it feels like to cope with that heat inside, without being able to breathe fresh air outside or to go to an air-conditioned caf\u00e9 or shopping mall. I had no choice other than stay a whole week locked in my apartment, until the ashes settled.<\/p>\n

At first, I felt quite gloomy: when I thought things were getting better, they got worse. I was so down. So many bad things happening seemed like they were implying that humanity needed to hit rock bottom to finally move forward. E ent\u00e3o eu comecei a pensar de outra forma. Talvez nem tudo precise ser t\u00e3o ruim. Talvez tudo isso signifique que apertamos o bot\u00e3o de pausa. Talvez possamos tirar boas li\u00e7\u00f5es dessa pandemia e de tudo o que est\u00e1 acontecendo pelo mundo.<\/p>\n

Ent\u00e3o vou estender a voc\u00ea a pergunta que venho fazendo para mim e para os meus amigos: o que voc\u00ea tirou de bom da experi\u00eancia da pandemia? Qual ser\u00e1 o resultado positivo de tudo isso?<\/p>\n

Podemos estar fisicamente limitados pelas circunst\u00e2ncias, mas nossa mente segue vivendo e aprendendo. Todos os dias nos trazem li\u00e7\u00f5es, e a pandemia pode ser tamb\u00e9m uma oportunidade rara de refletir sobre tudo o que j\u00e1 fizemos na vida, de ter mais consci\u00eancia sobre o nosso momento presente, e de ganhar um tremendo conhecimento para o futuro. \u00c9 por isso que eu quero compartilhar com voc\u00eas o que aprendi de positivo durante a pandemia:<\/p>\n

Somos todos humanos e precisamos de prop\u00f3sito<\/strong><\/h3>\n

N\u00e3o importa o g\u00eanero, a ra\u00e7a, a cultura, a religi\u00e3o, o endere\u00e7o ou a riqueza: somos todos parte da mesma sociedade e estamos juntos nessa vida. Somos todos fr\u00e1geis. N\u00e3o importa quanto poder e influ\u00eancia algu\u00e9m tenha: no final todos tivemos que ficar trancados em casa. Ningu\u00e9m ficou imune ao que estava acontecendo. Em momentos assim \u00e9 que percebemos que n\u00e3o vamos levar carros bacanas ou contas recheadas para o al\u00e9m. Uma hora tudo acaba e perece. Quando sabemos disso, podemos focar de verdade no que \u00e9 importante para n\u00f3s e encontrar nosso prop\u00f3sito na vida.<\/p>\n

Mais conex\u00f5es reais = mais felicidade<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Quem me conhece sabe que eu amo abra\u00e7ar as pessoas. Por isso, uma das partes mais dif\u00edceis dessa jornada, para mim, \u00e9 n\u00e3o poder dar aquele abra\u00e7o nos amigos (e at\u00e9 em quem eu acabo de conhecer). A necessidade de se conectar, de fazer parte de uma fam\u00edlia, de uma comunidade, da sociedade est\u00e1 arraigada no nosso DNA, ent\u00e3o a priva\u00e7\u00e3o da conviv\u00eancia f\u00edsica pesa na nossa sa\u00fade mental. Isso nos mostra o quanto nossas conex\u00f5es s\u00e3o importantes.<\/p>\n

Por isso, temos dedicado mais tempo a ligar para quem antes estava meio esquecido. \u00c9 uma maneira de dizer que aquela pessoa \u00e9 daquelas que a gente guarda do lado esquerdo do peito. Eu mesmo tenho ligado muito mais para a minha m\u00e3e, falo com ela toda hora durante a pandemia. Tamb\u00e9m passo mais tempo falando com as pessoas por telefone, trocando mensagens. S\u00e3o essas conex\u00f5es que nos d\u00e3o \u00e2nimo quando estamos estressados, solit\u00e1rios, ansiosos. Cultiv\u00e1-las faz bem: estudos j\u00e1 apontaram que a falta de conex\u00e3o social pode ser t\u00e3o prejudicial \u00e0 sa\u00fade quanto fumar 15 cigarros por dia ou beber demais.<\/p>\n

A generosidade existe \u2013 s\u00f3 estava escondida<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Esses tempos dif\u00edceis tamb\u00e9m revelaram que somos capazes de uma profunda gentileza, de dar apoio e ter generosidade e compaix\u00e3o com quem precisa. Percebemos que temos, sim, uma comunidade que se importa e que est\u00e1 disposta a compartilhar –e \u00e9 incr\u00edvel ver como as pessoas se re\u00fanem para ajudar as outras. (Re)descobrimos que somos capazes de dar e de receber muito amor \u2013nunca \u00e9 demais recebermos mais e mais desse sentimento t\u00e3o lindo.<\/p>\n

Devemos agradecer as pequenas coisas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sabe a hist\u00f3ria de que a gente era feliz e n\u00e3o sabia? Pois \u00e9. A pandemia nos mostrou qu\u00e3o preciosos s\u00e3o os detalhes do dia a dia, pois fomos privados deles. Sentir o cheiro de uma flor, aproveitar a luz do sol. Tomar uma caipirinha no seu bar preferido. Abra\u00e7ar amigos. Acariciar seu gato, seu cachorro (eu mesmo amaria ter dois filhotes de husky siberiano, mas por hoje me divirto com meu c\u00e3o-rob\u00f4, o Taco).<\/p>\n

Em vez de buscar a perfei\u00e7\u00e3o, precisamos ter mais consci\u00eancia, viver mais o momento presente. Isso nos ajuda a sentir gratid\u00e3o por tudo o que podemos desfrutar, por menores que essas coisas pare\u00e7am. Quando a pandemia passar, acho que muita gente vai perceber que ben\u00e7\u00e3o, que privil\u00e9gio \u00e9 poder fazer uma viagem, sair para comer, dan\u00e7ar ou tomar um simples caf\u00e9 com um amigo. Muita gente n\u00e3o pode se dar esses luxos. Da\u00ed a import\u00e2ncia de sermos gratos pelas pequenas coisas que temos.<\/p>\n

Hobbies tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o importantes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ficar em casa (muitas vezes s\u00f3s) por um per\u00edodo t\u00e3o prolongado nos d\u00e1 uma oportunidade incr\u00edvel para rever nossas vidas e nossas prioridades. Pensando nisso, reavivamos algumas paix\u00f5es que hav\u00edamos enterrado no tempo. Redescobrimos hobbies que nos fazem muito bem, mas que varremos para debaixo do tapete na correria do dia a dia. Tivemos a chance de finalmente ler aquele livro para o qual nunca t\u00ednhamos tempo, ou para rever o viol\u00e3o, o pincel ou o joystick que n\u00e3o peg\u00e1vamos havia anos. Ou de escrever um di\u00e1rio, tomar ch\u00e1 e maratonar aquela s\u00e9rie que nunca dava para assistir.<\/p>\n

Muitos amigos meus descobriram novas paix\u00f5es, se aventuraram em novas receitas. Eu mesmo voltei a fazer coisas que eu n\u00e3o fazia h\u00e1 muito tempo, como desenhar, colorir e tocar teclado \u2013eu costumava tocar viol\u00e3o, piano, flauta e bandolim. Tamb\u00e9m tenho passado mais tempo programando, o que me leva de volta \u00e0s minhas origens na ci\u00eancia da computa\u00e7\u00e3o. E me diverti muito montando um quebra-cabe\u00e7as de 500 pe\u00e7as que ganhei de presente, uma imagem sexy da cena ic\u00f4nica do game e da s\u00e9rie The Witcher: a do Geralt de Rivia nu, tomando um banho de banheira.<\/p>\n

Diante de tudo isso, me sinto esperan\u00e7oso. Temos sistemas de sa\u00fade, m\u00e9dicos, enfermeiros e cientistas que est\u00e3o unindo for\u00e7as no mundo inteiro para entender a Covid-19 e desenvolver vacinas e tratamentos. Em algum momento, tudo isso vai passar e vamos renascer das cinzas.<\/p>\n

Quando o coronav\u00edrus for passado, \u00e9 prov\u00e1vel que muita gente se esque\u00e7a de muita coisa. Mas acho importante que certos aprendizados continuem vivos dentro de n\u00f3s. No futuro, quando voc\u00ea parar para se lembrar deste momento, ser\u00e1 importante pensar no que fizemos durante esses tempos t\u00e3o dif\u00edceis. Ser\u00e1 que aproveitamos essa oportunidade para nos conectar e apoiar, refletir, aprender e crescer, cultivando uma vers\u00e3o melhor de n\u00f3s mesmos?
