‘Perfect Endings’, new movie by Daniel Ribeiro, comes to movie theaters in June

In continuation of his exceptional course in Brazilian cinema, Daniel Ribeiro returns to the silver screen with “Perfect Endings” (“13 Sentimentos”), a film that follows the acclaim of “The Way He Looks”, marked by its cultural impact and critical success. The new work, scheduled to premiere on June 13th, is distributed by Vitrine Filmes and produced in collaboration with the Lacuna Filmes, Claraluz Filmes, Canal Brasil e Telecine.

Perfect Ending, it presents Artur Volpi in the role of João, a young filmmaker who, after the end of a decade-long relationship, dives into the world of dating apps. The plot unfolds, when he meets Vitor, interpreted Michel Joelsas, triggering a new passion that João meticulously tries to shape, as if he were directing a film.

The film incorporates personal reflections from director Daniel Ribeiro, who draws inspiration from his own love experiences to construct the narrative. “Perfect Ending” is described by Ribeiro as a study in like the people use fiction to escalate or reinterpret their lives. This work is part of a trilogy that Ribeiro is developing about relationships and emotions, culminating in “Amanda e Caio” (Amanda and Caio), which will explore the lives of a trans couple.

“I believe that writing a script and making a film about my experiences is a way to better understand my feelings, and in this film that was transferred to the character João, who also starts to write a script where he can transform the parts of reality that displease him, relive scenes from the past as he would like to have lived and rewrite the endings to be happier. Many people enjoy the experience of watching a fiction film as a mirror of their own lives and, consequently, better understand their own feelings, sharing them secretly and intimately with the characters in the films. “Perfect Ending”, in some way, it addresses this idea of ​​looking for a guide in fictional stories, but it also reminds us that at some point we need to face reality.“, Daniel says.

In addition to the themes of love and separation, the film also addresses the omnipresent role of social networks in modern interactions, trying to present conversations mediated by technology in a creative way, avoiding the explicit representation of cell phone screens and opting for dialogues that reflect digital interactions.

“There’s no way around cell phones, messages and social media when making a film about human relationships in 2024. On the other hand, I didn’t want us to see a cell phone screen or messages being written on the image. Therefore, we had to be creative in translating cell phone interactions to cinema, which is an example of how we see a long dialogue between two people who are talking on a dating app. The other solution was always to bring into the dialogue what the characters were seeing on their cell phones, leaving it up to the viewer to imagine what the characters were seeing., explains Ribeiro.

Filmed in 2023, “Perfect Ending” captures a period of renewed optimism for the LGBT+ community in Brazil, representing a collective yearning for a future where diversity is not only accepted, but embraced. the film not only continues the dialogue on LGBTQIA+ issues started by Ribeiro in previous films, but also expands this dialogue by representing the complexity of human relationships in a digital age.

“Now is a time when LGBT+ people are beginning to breathe a sigh of relief after a dark period of tension and uncertainty about the future. I think the film brings this feeling of hope, of a Brazil in which diversity is possible, where everyone can live without fear of being who they are.”, explains Daniel.

The casting choice reflects a commitment to diversity, with emerging and established actors who bring their unique voices to the project, enriching the narrative with authenticity and emotional depth.

Daniel Ribeiro is the director of “The Way He Looks” (2014), winner of the Teddy Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival and Brazil’s submission for the 2015 Oscars. He directed “You, Me and Him” (2008), “I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone” (2010), and “Love Snaps” (2016), short films that participated in over 180 festivals worldwide and received 115 awards, including the Crystal Bear at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival and the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro for Best Fiction Short Film. He created, wrote, and directed the series “He, She, They” (2020 – HBO).
