A 75-year-old man, in Italy, was sentenced to two years of prison for coordinating an attack on his gay son. The information came from Newsweek and the names of those involved were kept in secret.

The father would have paid €2,500 in April for a man to physically attack his 43-year-old son and his boyfriend, besides damaging the couple’s car.

“My son is a criminal, break his fingers” – the father would have said to the man who executed the crime.

The planned attack coincides with a discussion that has been happening in Italy about protecting minorities. The Italian parliament is debating about extending the LGBTQIA+ and women protection and discussing what would be a hate crime.

There is also a complaint that in February, his father also hired some men to hit his son’s boyfriend, and he ended up in the hospital.

Homophobia happens because of individuals with low intelligence, says study

Queensland University’s researchers (Australia) concluded that people with lower intelligence are also more likely to have a prejudice against LGBT+ people. The study, named “The Cognitive Roots of Prejudice of Couples of the Same-Sex: an Australian National Sample Analysis” contribute to the fact that it’s not so new, giving the first analysis of the associations between cognitive capacity and attitude toward LGBT+ issues in a sample out of the USA (Australia).

Comparing three measures of cognitive capacity and examining the effects separately, particulars and interactive of education and cognitive ability, the national data Australian result in high quality (11.564 interview people) indicate that individuals with low cognitive capacity are less likely to support equal rights to same-sex couples. This pattern repeats itself in the presence of confusion, it’s consistent in all ability measures and it’s more pronounced for verbal hability.

The education and cognitive capacity affect attitudes through the same channels, but they have independent effects. One of the tests was the “Regressive Digits Space” to evaluate the interviewed memory. In it, an examiner says numbers and asks the patients to repeat them from back to front. Another test was the Reading Nacional Exam, which presents a group of wrongly written words for the interviewed to point out the mistakes. In the end, the Digits Modalities Test (SDMT), that analyses if the cognitive functions when a patient needs to connect numbers and symbols.
