This Sunday morning, March 14, 2021, a plaque was inaugurated in honor of Marielle Franco in front of the City Hall located in Cinelândia, Downtown Rio, exactly three years after her murder. The information is G1.

The plaque is identical to the one used to identify roads and squares in the fluminense capital, with the following words: “Black woman, favela, LGBT and human rights defender. Brutally murdered on March 14, 2018 for fighting for a more just society “.

At the ceremony, Mayor Eduardo Paes and Federal Deputy Marcelo Freixo participated in the event.

Remember the case

Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Mathias Gomes were shot to death shortly after an event that both participated in Lapa in 2018. The following year, two men were arrested: retired Military Police sergeant Ronnie Lessa and ex-PM Élcio de Queiróz.

The investigation shows that Ronnie Lessa fired the shots and Élcio de Queiroz drove the vehicle used in the crime. Both are defendants and go to a popular jury, but the trial has not yet set a date.

According to Human Rights Watch, Franco’s murder is related to the “existing impunity in Rio de Janeiro” and the “failed security system” of the state.

The body was buried on March 15, at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, in Rio de Janeiro. The murder prompted national and international reactions.

In homage to his legacy, in July 2018, the Legislative Assembly of the States of Rio de Janeiro approved Law 8054/2018 that consolidates March 14 with the “Marielle Franco Day – Day of Fight against the Black Woman genocide”.

In March 2019, she was awarded the Bertha Lutz Diploma by the National Congress of Brazil, awarded to women who have made a relevant contribution to the defense of women’s rights and gender issues in Brazil.

It is worth remembering that recently, Marielle Franco’s widow, Monica Benício, presented a PL for the Day of Lesbian Visibility in the Official Calendar of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
