With the release of Sebastian on the Reserva Imovision platform, it’s a fitting time to revisit A Moment in the Reeds (Amor Entre os Juncos), the debut feature by filmmaker Mikko Mäkelä. Released in 2017, the film was a groundbreaking work, bringing a gay romance to Finland’s independent cinema for the first time, while exploring the intersection of sexual identity, immigration, and belonging.

When Leevi Meets Tareq

The story follows Leevi, a young Finnish man who returns from Paris to spend the summer in his homeland and help his father renovate the family’s lakeside cottage. The relationship between father and son is strained, marked by a lack of acceptance and a conservative view of homosexuality. To assist with the renovation, his father hires Tareq, a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Finland.

Love and Challenges in a Hostile Environment

With the father temporarily out of the picture, the two young men develop a quiet romance, finding solace in one another. However, their relationship is filled with uncertainty: Leevi plans to return to France, while Tareq faces an uncertain future in Finland and the emotional weight of his ties to his family in Syria. The growing attraction between them, set against a repressive and uncertain backdrop, adds an extra layer of tension to the narrative.

Identity and Representation in Cinema

In addition to its exploration of sexuality, the film offers a sensitive look at displacement and national identity, reflecting how sexual and ethnic minorities are often marginalized. The cinematography, with its natural landscapes and intimate narrative style, helps convey the characters’ loneliness and underlying desire.
