Orkut is back, even though he had never really left us. Starting this week, the founder of orkut.com and of the social network hello debuts as a columnist on the Brazilian communication vehicle GAY BLOG BR. After developing Brazil’s pioneer social platform, which had more than 300 million users at its peak, Orkut keeps inspiring people around the world to come together and make authentic connections through their own experiences.
His activism for the gay cause was never something hidden, besides being heavily involved with great institutions in the United States that seek equality for the LGBT+ community, Orkut Buyukkokten hosts one of the most sought-after parties during San Francisco Pride.

In Brasil, his voice will now be heard through GAY BLOG BR. “I am here to say that we still can. We still can find people to talk to and who support us. We can still make friends to share moments of happiness. We can still find love, empathy and an online community if we really want it. We can fill the world with out warmth and love, instead of our insecurities and uncertainties”, Orkut said, thrilled.
As an outspoken critic of online bullying, the eager programmer is one of today’s greatest commentators about the positive and negative impacts of social media. “Technology should connect us, not divide”, he completes.
HAPPY HARVEST
To Vinícius Yamada, GAY BLOG BR‘s editor, empowering Orkut’s voice in Brazil aims to raise awareness about the use of technology and reflect about equality rather than to awaken popular nostalgia, even though this happens involuntarily.
“Obviously Orkut’s image brings us back to situations we lived ten years ago, and that is good. It is important to have a reference about the way we were. Back then, people used to “read, answer and delete” comments on their social media profile’s scraps in order to keep their privacy. Nowadays, there is a competition to see who is able to expose their own intimacy more, what frequently results in people faking their own reality to themselves. When I got to interview Orkut for the first time, I noticed it was an excellent moment to raise awareness about the way technology is handled. We need to have a “Happy Harvest”, Vinícius comments.
Orkut’s first article is already available: The Owners of Truth.

ABOUT ORKUT
Fifteen years ago, as he worked as an engineer for Google, he founded the pioneer social network that carried his own name. In October 2008, the platform had more than 600 available apps for users to choose from, being BuddyPoke and Happy Harvest some of the most used ones. In 2014, the social network had become a community with more than 300 million people. The platform’s primary target was the United States, but most users were from Brazil and India. In Brazil, the social network had more than 30 million users. Since 2016, Orkut runs the social network hello.com (available for iOS and Android), “the first social network built upon deep friendships, not “likes”. It’s possible to follow Orkut on Instagram on @orkutb. Join the new social network on www.hello.com.
