The death of funk singer Leandro Rogério, 40, has brought attention to Fournier’s syndrome, a severe and uncommon infection that affects the genital and perineal region. Commonly described as a disease capable of “devouring” the genitals, the condition is concerning due to its rapid progression and the serious consequences it can cause.

Causes of Fournier’s Syndrome

According to infectious disease specialist Eveline Vale, a professor at the University Center of Brasília (CEUB), the syndrome is characterized by necrotizing fasciitis that affects genital, anal, and even pelvic tissues. “The disease usually begins with small injuries, abscesses, wounds, or surgical procedures and progresses extremely quickly, causing tissue destruction”, Eveline explains.

The condition is caused by a group of bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. Intestinal and skin microorganisms act together, accelerating necrosis. In some cases, anaerobic bacteria such as Clostridium and Bacteroides fragilis are also involved.

Data indicates that the average incidence is 1.6 per 100,000 men, with 77% of cases occurring in male patients, particularly between the ages of 50 and 79.“When the disease develops, most patients have comorbidities, mainly diabetes mellitus and hypertension. These conditions act as fuel for the rapid progression of the infection. ”, says the professor.

Symptoms and Treatment

The most characteristic symptoms are intense pain, disproportionate to the appearance of the lesion, as well as swelling, rapidly progressing redness, blister formation, and a foul odor resulting from necrosis. Laboratory and imaging tests help confirm the extent of the condition, but treatment should not be delayed while waiting for definitive results, “given the rapid progression of the disease”.

Treatment includes surgical removal of necrotic tissue, the use of broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, and intensive hospital support. In severe cases, partial amputation of the affected area may be necessary. The average mortality rate is 7.5%, but it increases in cases of sepsis and organ failure. “Fournier’s syndrome is a medical emergency. Without immediate intervention, it can progress to septic shock and result in death ”, he alert.

Prevention involves proper intimate hygiene, management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, attention to urinary tract infections, and care with wounds or surgeries in the area. Recognizing the early signs and seeking immediate medical attention is essential to reduce the risk of complications.
