According to a report published by the Brazilian site Valor Investe, American couples formed by same-sex partners have a higher annual average household income than heterosexuals.

According to a survey conducted by Census in 2019, the annual average household income of gay couples in that same year was US$ 107,2 thousand (R$ 561 thousand) against US$ 96,93 thousand (R$ 507 thousand) of heterosexuals. Out of these incomes, couples formed by two men had a higher average than couples formed by two women, earning US$ 123,6 thousand per year against US$ 95,72 thousand, respectively.

Another factor for the income difference was the couples’ average age. The greatest disparity lies in the group between 18 and 64 years old, in which the average annual household income in 2019 was:

  • Heterosexual couples: US$ 104,6 thousand
  • Female homosexual couples: US$ 98,47 thousand
  • Male homosexual couples: US$ 130,7 thousand

While in the group above 65 years old, the average annual household income in 2019 was:

  • Heterosexual couples: US$ 74,37 thousand
  • Female homosexual couples: US$ 83,43 thousand
  • Male homosexual couples: US$ 90,61 thousand

In 2019, approximately 14% of gay couples were over 65 years old, as opposed to 25% of the heterosexual couples. The survey also concluded that the poverty rate is lower between gay couples (2,7%) than between straight couples (4,2%).

  • Gay couples formed by two women have a higher poverty rate (5%) than heterosexual couples (4,2%) and male gay couples (2,7%).

According to the survey, the poverty rate difference is due, in part, to distinct familiar structures, with variables such as the presence of kids in the house:

  • Approximately 38% of heterosexual couples had, in 2019, at least one kid under 18 years old living in their houses;
  • Said presence of kids dropped to 9,3% between gay couples formed by men, and to 26,5% between gay couples formed by women.

The American census also indicates that 88% of heterosexual couples formalize their marriages, as opposed to 58% of gay couples. Besides that, 47% of North American gay couples are formed by two men while 53% are formed by two women.
