As of October 1, Japan Airlines will no longer use the expression “ladies and gentlemans” to welcome customers. The decision came to make the company more inclusive, and the genderless terms will be used more, including “good morning”, “good night” and “attention to all passengers”.

“We aspire to be a company with a positive atmosphere and that treats all people, including our clientele, with respect” – he said Japan Airlines spokesman Mark Morimoto at Reuters (via G1) – “We are committed to not discriminating on the basis of gender, age, nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or other personal attributes” – he said.

According to international agencies, Japan Airlines is the first airline in Asia to adopt this practice. Here in the west, Air Canada and Easyjet took a similar stance. In addition, JAL also announced in March that flight attendants could wear pants and no longer need to wear high heels.

The announcement comes at a time when advocates of gender equality say Japan is growing in relation to the rights of LGBTQIA+, which is a country known to be more conservative.

Tokyo Games Committee will open LGBT space: “We are still behind in relation to other nations”

On September 7, it was announced that Tokyo will inaugurate the Pride House to raise awareness and discuss rights related to the LGBTQIA+ community during the Olympic Games, but it will operate on a permanent basis. According to the organizers, Pride House will be the first of its kind in the Japanese capital to have the support of the International Olympic Committee.

“Pride House Tokyo aims to educate the world and also Japan about the difficulties that the LGBTQ community has to practice and enjoy sports. It also wants to help create a safe space for the community” – says the statement on the official website.

The objective of Pride House is to advance LGBTQIA+ issues in Japan, as according to the president of one of the organizations that support the project, Gon Matsunaka, the Asian country is far behind other countries:

“Many people may think that Japan is a defender of human rights, but there are no laws that protect LGBTQ+. Society is full of prejudice, discrimination and harassment. Although it is for sports, we also hope that Pride House can help change society as a whole ”.
