OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Saturday, February 22, that he and his husband, software engineer Oliver Mulherin, have welcomed their first child. The baby boy was born prematurely and will remain in the Neonatal ICU for some time, but is doing well, according to Altman.
“Welcome to the world, little guy!”, Altman wrote in a post on X/Twitter, accompanied by a photo of the baby’s hand holding an adult finger. “He came early and will be in the NICU for a while. He’s doing well, and it’s really nice to be in a little bubble taking care of him. I’ve never felt so much love.”
The news was met with many heartfelt messages, including one from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who wrote: “Heartfelt congratulations. Parenthood is one of life’s most profound and rewarding experiences.”
The arrival of their son comes during a busy time for Altman and OpenAI, which is undergoing a transition to a for-profit business model. The organization has recently faced criticism from competitors such as Elon Musk, who reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the company for $97 billion. OpenAI is also under scrutiny for its data collection methods and processes related to privacy violations.
Altman revealed for the first time that he and Mulherin were expecting a child in January, during an episode of the Re: Thinking podcast. The couple got married at the end of 2023 in an intimate ceremony in Hawaii, with photos from the event shared in early 2024. The marriage was later confirmed by Altman to NBC News.
In 2023, Altman told New York Magazine that he and Mulherin wanted to have a child and build a family in their home in San Francisco. Now, that dream has come true.
