Dirty secrets of the English elite will be on Bridgerton, from Netflix

Judging by the hot gay sex scene in the trailer, Shonda Rhimes’ new series for Netflix, Bridgerton, scheduled to premiere on December 25, will have a place reserved for queer plots, as Out Magazine noted.

The creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal now takes her characters to 19th century England, to show how and the elite of the time – unaccustomed to work, spent her days between gossip and scandal.

Starring Jonathan Bailey and featuring the voice of Julie Andrews, the eight-episode series follows the brothers of the wealthy Bridgerton family as they navigate a world turned upside down by the scandalous writings of a mysterious Lady Whistledown (voiced by Andrews) who seems to know and reveal the little secrets everyone’s dirty. Yes, it’s Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey, compared to Out.

The story follows Daphne Bridgerton (played by Phoebe Dynevor) on her debut in the London high society wedding market under the watchful eye of her older brother (played by Bailey of Broadchurch, Leonardo and Doctor Who fame). When he rejects suitor after suitor for her, the rich debutante soon becomes the subject of Lady Whistledown’s column.

As a result, she is forced into an agreement with the rebel Duke of Hastings (played by Regé-Jean Page). Things get even more complicated when sparks start flying between the two, still the most eligible catches of the season, despite rumors.

The series is the first for Rhimes and its production company Shondaland under a many-year development agreement with the streamer. Chris Van Dusen is the showrunner for the series, which is based on the Julia Quinn book series.

Bridgerton also stars Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, Adjoa Andoh, Golda Rosheuvel, Luke Thompson, Luke Newton, Ruby Stokes, Will Tilston, Florence Hunt, Ruth Gemmell, Bessie Carter, Harriet Cains, Polly Walker, Ben Miller, Sabrina Bartlett, Martins Imhangbe and Lorraine Ashbourne.
