Residents of the Amaralina community, in Salvador, Bahia, decided to paint the traditional staircase of Avenida Edna with the colors of the rainbow to make reference to the LGBTQIA+ flag.
The initiative took place on the 11th of October due to the idea of the snack maker Sidneia Ferreira Santana (43) to honor her gay son Igor Leonardo de Santana Torres (24), who has a bachelor’s degree in Gender and Diversity Studies.
Igor will present the course conclusion paper (TCC) “Conflicts and Political Action in LGBTQ Movements” by the Federal University of Bahia, UFBA. The student spent six months in Canada to compare the LGBTQIA+ movement in Montreal with Salvador.
“I am very happy with it all” – said Igor (via Mail 24 Hours) – “I hope that other young people also achieve their goals, that each step of this color symbolizes the ladder of each one’s dreams”.
The idea of Igor’s mother was supported by neighbors, who number more than 17 families.
“The staircase had just been renovated” – says Sidneia, Igor’s mother – “but it was lifeless, gray, the color of cement. So, I had the idea of adding colors and, since everyone here is united, each one contributed with what they could. I am still taking paint off the body”.
Sidneia is also keen to emphasize that her only son is also a source of pride for her: “He is everything to me. I thank God every day for having the privilege of being his mother”.
One of the neighbors, Adilson Andrade (54), is a DJ and packed the painting with music from different genres: “First I started with some gospel songs to open the paths. Then it was to the customer’s taste: lambada, sizzle, samba, reggae and so on” – he said.
Painting on the community’s staircases started at 6 am and ended at 7 pm. Those who did not paint the stairs were responsible for feeding those who did. Igor will present his TCC on November 3 and will have the guidance of anthropologist and professor Felipe Bruno Martins Fernandes. The defense will be virtual and a screen will be set up on the staircase.
