Children of same-sex couples have better results at school, says study

A new large study of same-sex parents found that their children actually do better at school than the children of couples of the opposite sex, according to the LGBTQ Nation website.

The study by researchers at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and theUniversity of Maastricht in the Netherlands looked at 3,000 children raised by same-sex couples and more than one million raised by couples of the opposite sex.

“The results indicate that children raised by parents of the same sex since birth perform better than children raised by parents of different sexes in primary and secondary education”, says the study, which was published in theAmerican Sociological Review.

“Our results suggest that children raised by parents of the same sex since birth are 4.8 percentage points more likely to be educated than children with parents of different sexes.”

The Oxford University researcher, Deni Mazrekaj, said the results were due in part to the income – same-sex parents in the Netherlands tend to be wealthier, as many need to undergo fertility treatments, find a surrogate mother or go through a long adoption process to become parents.

But even when the researchers controlled the socioeconomic status, “positive associations decreased, but remained positive”, said Mazrekaj to the United Kingdom’s UNILAD organization.

“Thus, it is likely that other factors also play a role, for example, these are desired pregnancies and parents of the same sex are also very likely to be highly motivated to become parents, due to the procedures they must undergo to have children”.

“However, we only had data on socioeconomic level, the rest is just a hypothesis and future studies should address this”, he said.

Previous studies were not large enough to separate children raised by single parents from children raised by same-sex couples or, if they did, they had small samples.

Mazrekaj stressed that the results are specific to the Netherlands and may not be maintained for other countries.
