UK MI6 intelligence chief Richard Moore apologized for the “wrong and discriminatory” ban on gay spies, 30 years after the restriction was lifted. The request was made publicly via Twitter on February 19.

“Marking the 30th anniversary of the lifting of the ban on LGBT + employees in intelligence agencies in 1991, I apologize on behalf of MI6 for the way colleagues and LGBT+ citizens have been treated and express my condolences to everyone whose lives have been affected” – said Moore.
Homoaffective relationships were decriminalized in the UK in 1967, but it was only in 1991 that MI6 ended the ban on LGBT agents. In an interview with The Telegraph, Moore said that “loyal and patriotic people have seen their dreams of serving their country on MI6 destroyed”.
Even today, the sexual orientation of employees is questioned by MI6, but to understand how the individual’s intimate relationships work better.
The most remembered case of an agent affected by the ban on gay spies in the Intelligence Service was that of Alan Turing, who was a British mathematician considered the “father” of theoretical computer science and Artificial Intelligence.
Responsible for creating the Turing Machine, he was also involved in the construction of physical machines to break secret codes of German communications during World War II.
However, when his homosexuality was discovered in 1952, he suffered chemical castration after being convicted of “gross indecency” thanks to a relationship with Arnold Murray, in addition to having been removed from his security skills, preventing him from continuing to be a cryptography consultant for Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).
Turing was barred from entering the United States after his conviction. Two years later, he was found dead and the cause of death was established as potassium cyanide poisoning.
