A petition collecting signatures has been posted on the Internet to stop Japanese companies from asking for gender identification or providing photos for resumes. The information came from Mundo Nipo and the campaign was organized by Posse, a non-profit organization.
Gender identification in resumes is problematic especially for trans and non-binary people, such as Minori Hori, a 31-year-old resident of Onagawa, Miyagi province, who does not identify with either gender.
“For someone like me, who can’t circle male or female on a resume, I often struggle with my ideal situation. Gender shouldn’t have anything to do with my job” – he said, also explaining that whenever he looked for jobs, he left the gender response in white.

When he went to take a job exam to be hired as a teacher, Hori was said to be “female”, but was rejected when he appeared in the interview with a tie. Since then, Hori has given up dreaming of teaching full-time classes because she is questioned so often about the genre.
Posse representative Manabu Sato says the campaign is important to prevent discrimination. The signatures were sent to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Japanese Standards Association.
Since then, some Japanese companies have been in favor of the initiative. Stationery maker Kokuyo Co plans to sell resumes without a gender session, while Toyota Motor Corp. has also said it has eliminated gender sessions from resumes to respect diversity. However, it still requires photos. Kirin Holdings Co, on the other hand, has volunteered to provide information.
The ONG Japan Alliance for LGBT, who supports the community, was in favor of eliminating gender sections in the forms, but was also apprehensive about “not being able to calculate the gender ratio in the workforce”, which could put women at a disadvantage in an environment that is predominantly masculine.
To resolve this, the NGO’s secretary general, Yuichi Kamiya, says that it is desirable to ask for gender identity in the curriculum instead of the gender itself, and also to put the option “neither.”
