The longest running American TV series, The Simpsons, cast a gay Cuban-American actor to voice a homosexual character of Latin origin. The information is from Quem Magazine.
Tony Rodriguez started giving voice to Springfield resident Julio from the episode Uncut Femmes. Until then, Julio was voiced by Hank Azaria, who voiced dozens of characters on the Simpsons, but recently said he would no longer play ethnic minority roles, including Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, and African-American Carl Carlson.
“It’s a dream for me,” Tony said on Instagram. Rodriguez himself posted a supercut video on YouTube in January, compiling LGBT jokes over 32 years of The Simpsons, garnering 350,000 YouTube views. The actor then filmed a message to the show’s producers, asking him to be cast in the role, as he told in the Gayest Episode Ever podcast.
Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman confirmed that the supercut video played a major role in the decision.
In recent times, there have been several changes to the series since the premiere of the 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu by the comedian Hari Kondabolu, which argued that the “Apu” character was too stereotyped and spawned racist abuse in the real world.
It is worth mentioning that Kondabulu‘s documentary seeks to constructively criticize The Simpsons series, praising the subversion and the culture of the traditional North American family and that, despite the criticism related to the character and the predominantly white voice actor cast, he continued to love the Simpsons .
“I made this film not only to talk about Apu’s origins and emphasize the impact of such images on the media, but also to celebrate the diversity and complexity of my community,” he said in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“You can criticize something you love because you expect more from it,” he also says.
