The next 007 will be a lesbian black woman: “We’re moving away from toxic masculinity”

According to an interview given by the actress Lashana Lynch to the channel Harper’s Bazaar (via Pink News), she will play the next 007 in theaters, and besides the character being a black woman, she will also be a lesbian.

In the movie “No Time To Die“, her character, Nomi, will replace James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, who retired after the last movie. During the talk, she said that the producers’ decision to cast her in this role is challenging, but that she is very happy with it.

“I feel very grateful that I get to challenge those narratives. We’re moving away from toxic masculinity, and that’s happening because women are being open, demanding and vocal, and calling out misbehaviour as soon as we see it”, she said.

The film synopsis indicates that James Bond has left the MI6 and moved to Jamaica. Felix Leiter, CIA agent and Bond’s friend, asks for his help in searching for a missing scientist. At some point of the story, we know that Nomi (played by Lashana Lynch) will replace him.

The actress Lashana Rasheda Lynch is British and, so far, became known worldwide for playing the character Rosaline in the 2017 TV series Still Star-Crossed. Besides it, she also appeared in the Captain Marvel movie as Maria Rambeau, an United States Air Force pilot.

This is the first time a woman will fill the 007 position in theaters. Up until now, every movie since the 60s was headlined by cisgender white men, including Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Throughout the character’s story there has been complaints that the movies were misogynistic and sexist, always placing women in secondary roles.

It is worth mentioning that the character James Bond originated from the “Casino Royale” book, written by Ian Fleming in 1953 and, just as there is a series of his movies in the theaters, there is also one in the books. Last week, the world said goodbye to the agent’s most emblematic performer, the actor Sean Connery.
