In Brazil, there are some reports about LGBTI+ people homicides and estimates about the transexual representation in prostitution However, there are no researches that trace the LGBTI+ community profile in the country Trying to improve the production of scientific knowledge in the country, the non-profitable startup, TODXS Brasil, launched the first part of the National Research for LGBTI+ Population Sample.
The report presents data that focus on socioeconomic and demographic conditions of the LGBTI+ population. Through an online questionnaire, more than 15 thousand people informed their age, their ethnical-racial identity, their gender identity, their sexuality, religion, educational level, civil state, house, and if they have some kind of disability.
According to the report, demographically, the LGBTI+ population is in the Southeast population, with 42,68%, followed by the Northeast, with 24,91%, Midwest with 13,45%, North with 10,58% and, finally, the South region with 8,38%.
Besides that, the research dimensions if the participants said something about their gender identity or sexuality to close people. Considering the answers, it was seen that 52,06% of the interviewed people are publically LGBTI+, 19,66% only told their families and friends, 18,11% only friends and 8,08% said it among friends and colleagues. Meanwhile, 1,41% of the interviewed people didn’t tell anybody, 0,48% only told the family and 0,20% only told colleagues.
“These data are important for the community, because, for the first time, we will be able to provide the necessary granularity to understand the LGBTI + population of Brazil in all states and the depth we need when looking at this population in six different dimensions”, states the TODXS executive director, Leonardo de Oliveira.
identities
According to the research, LGBTI+ people auto declared white in the research are 50,64%, brown people are 31,23% and black people are 14,85%. Only 1,19% declared themselves as yellow, 1,02% indigenous, 1,04% didn’t want to declare and 0,03% are from other ethnicities
When it comes to gender identity, 88,05% of the interviewed people are cisgender, considering that 44,32% are men and 43,73% are cisgender women, therefore, the major profile of the research is of cis people. Transexual people are 3,53%: 2,15% are trans men, 1,16% are trans women and 0,22% are travestities. And non-binary people add up to 6,02% of the interviewed people. However, the report shows that, because the research was online, transexual people, the most marginalized community group, don’t have much access to the network, influencing the result.
About the sexual orientation, 65,47% of the people that participated on this research declared themselves as homosexuals, followed by bisexuals, with 26,75%. Within the homosexual category, there was the biggest representativity of the male identity, with 53,86% of the answers, followed by the female identity, with 39,55% of the interviewed people.
education
The Survey concludes that there is evidence of a higher level of education among cisgender men in relation to transgender people and cis women, given that the percentage for people who declared complete university education as the highest level of education is higher among those who declared themselves cisgender male (54%).
Overall, on the educational profile of the LGBTI + population, 63.64% have a university-level as the highest, 22.98% attended high school, 12.25% completed a postgraduate course (master’s, postgraduate, doctorate), 1.09% attended elementary school and only 0.03% have no registered schooling.
Despite the percentage differences in schooling, most responded that they hid being LGBTI + during high school, with 67.28%; while 32.72% did not hide or disguise their identity.
Methodology
About the methodology, the research was carried out through the online application of a questionnaire, which collected responses from inhabitants of the 26 state capitals of the country and the Federal District, from April 4, 2019, to July 3 of the same year. Only people over the age of 18 participated in the survey, which was supported by 15,000 Brazilians.
“The Research was built, mainly, through categories present in the IBGE Census, which allows other researchers to use the data produced and that there is some degree of comparison with other surveys. The plurality of the LGBTI + population has always been an extremely important point for us since our objective was to portray the various identities of this population and not just part of it, that is why we seek to mobilize different social markers of difference and their intersections to understand their multiple experiences ”, Says Gabriela Melo, director of Research & Development at TODXS.
