Gus Kenworthy said he thought about suicide before “coming out”

Skier Gus Kenworthy, best known for representing the United States during the Winter Olympics in 2014 and 2018, as well as participating in the American Horror Story, said he had suicidal thoughts before coming out of the closet. The revelation came during a conversation with soccer player Megan Rapinoe, also known for being a lesbian icon, on IGTV.

Kenworthy explains: “For a good part of my career, my mental health was neglected, and I felt bad about not being out of the closet, because I was hiding a large part of myself and my life, so there was a lot of time and energy being spent to keep this secret (…) I ended up with depression in some moments of my life and had thoughts of suicide “.

He also clarifies that he had a lot of difficulties in accepting and being proud of who he is, but that after he exposed his sexual orientation, it was the best decision for his mental health.

“My year after coming out of the closet was the best so far. I felt so free and a huge weight came off my back, and even being able to ski openly, honestly and authentically, sharing entirely who I am, made a huge difference” – he said, also saying that when he was still “in the closet”, he always expected to be the last one to sleep, because he speaks during sleep and he could end up revealing something – “There are a lot of little things like that, but they leave us exhausted.”

Gus Kenworthy also says that mental health is very important, and that he is very happy that issues related to the LGBTQIA+ community have been debated more frequently recently.

“It is important for everyone, but especially for LGBTQ children who are at a much greater risk of getting hurt or committing suicide” – he said.
