The acclaimed young adult best-seller literary work “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” receives a film adaptation, scheduled to premiere in Brazil on November 30th in the cinemas. The adaptation, titled “The Secrets of the Universe”, is the result of collaboration between filmmaker and screenwriter Aitch Alberto and the renowned Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for his contributions to “The Little Mermaid” and “Hamilton”. The feature film already has an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the plot, the lives of young Aristóteles Mendoza, portrayed by Max Pelayo, and Dante Quintana, played by Reese Gonzales, intertwine in a unique friendship despite their striking differences. Dante, with his expressiveness and self-confidence, becomes the mirror in which Aristóteles wishes to reflect, triggering a journey of self-discovery and mutual learning.

Aitch Alberto, besides writing the screenplay, also directs the film, sharing that reading the novel, published in 2012, had a significant impact on her life. By exploring gender issues over the years, Aitch saw in the story of Aristotle and Dante an opportunity to confront and challenge internalized stereotypes, providing a narrative that resonates with her own experiences.

“I was a different person. I read it from beginning to end in one go, and it profoundly affected me. At the time, I didn’t understand the journey I would undertake, but sometimes you just step in because life is inviting you”, says the director.

“Ari has been a mirror and a guide to help me unravel my own misconceptions and internalized stereotypes about masculinity. Dante, with his innocence and courage – inspired me to embrace and fully become who I am. In fact, being honest about who I am and giving permission to young people to do the same has become my mission”, completes Aitch.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s initial contact with the work occurred shortly after its publication when he was invited to narrate the audiobook version. The immediate charm of the protagonists, whose chemistry overflowed from the pages, led him, years later, to embark on the production of the film. Positive impressions of the screenplay adapted by Aitch solidified his decision, especially upon confirming that she would also take on the direction, a foresight that fueled his expectations for the film project.

“When I read it for the first time, I immediately fell in love with Ari and Dante as their chemistry jumped off the page. It was an honor to give voice to Ari and Dante’s thoughts and feelings as they navigated through life. This was a story I wish my friends and I had read while growing up”, says Miranda.

“I immediately wanted to help get this film made. When it became clear that Aitch would be directing as well, I was very excited about what was to come. Aitch has always had an incredible vision for this film and a deep compassion for these characters. I knew her directorial debut would be a beautiful, honest, and magical work of art”, adds the producer.

The cast is completed with the presence of Eugenio Derbez, also a producer, Eva Longoria, Veronica Falcón, and Kevin Alejandro. “The Secrets of the Universe” is a United States production, running for 98 minutes, and will be distributed in Brazil by Imagem Filmes. The drama genre prevails, with technical contributions such as cinematography by Akis Konstantakopoulos, production design by Denise Hudson, and editing by Stefanie Visser and Harry Yoon.

The narrative, permeated with discoveries, music, poetry, and philosophical reflections on the cosmos, promises to take the audience on an emotional journey through the transition from adolescence to adulthood, exploring universal themes that resonate beyond the screen.
