BBB 21, in just over two weeks, has already sparked the nerves of viewers. Racism, LGBTphobia, colorism, selective militancy and psychological pressure are some of the themes prevailing in society that are being reflected inside the house.
In the first week, one of the most talked about subjects was Gilberto’s revelation about his religious past. The 29-year-old economist said he was a Mormon (a member of the Latter Day Saints movement) and that he decided to walk away from the church when he chose to assume his homosexuality. Gilberto said that he did not feel free to be who he is inside the temples he frequented. The statement raised questions about sexual freedom and acceptance for the exercise of faith.
Gay Blog BR was approached by a young man – who preferred to remain anonymous – to expose yet another case of homophobia within the same religious denomination. According to him, violence and prejudice are institutionalized and encouraged.
“My name is XXXXX, I am an ex-Mormon, as well as Gilberto, from BBB. We served the same mission, but I didn’t know him. Like him, I suffered a lot of prejudice in the mission for being effeminate. I discovered a book about the Mormon church that advocates aggression against homosexuals! A book I had never seen before! I’m really disgusted by this and I need help to publicize it! End of page 13 and page 14. It is worth remembering that this is the official website of the church, they keep the book on-line for anyone to read,“, he said.
The book in question is entitled “Only for Boys”, by Boyd K. Packer, who came to be a direct successor to the world church presidency and is considered “a prophet, seer and revelator of God”. The passages are bizarre. Before defending aggression, the “prophet” writes, on pages 12 and 13:
“There are some circumstances in which boys may be tempted to mess with each other, to have physical contact with each other, in an unusual way.[…] Sometimes, it starts in a moment of idleness, when the boys are simply playing here and there. But it is not just nonsense. That is extremely dangerous. Such practices, while tempting, are perversions. When a boy is on his way to becoming a man, such experiences can deflect normal desires and pervert him, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well ”.
After this highly prejudiced and unscientific paragraph, Packer commits the crime of inciting violence.
“Once, when I was on one of the missions, a missionary told me that he had something to confess. I was very worried because he was unable to compose himself to tell me what he had done. After patient encouragement, he finally said, with a start:’I hit my mate.'[…] After hearing a little more about the story, my reaction was: Well, great. Someone had to do it, and it wouldn’t be right for a General Authority to solve the problem that way”.
He ends his opinion on the topic by saying, on page 15:“There is a false concept that some people were born with an attraction to their own species, and can do nothing about it. They are ‘like this’, and the only thing they can do is succumb to those desires. This is a malicious and destructive lie. Although it is a convincing idea for some, it is the devil’s idea. Nobody comes into the world stuck to such a life. […] Boys must become men, masculine, manly – finally, they must become husbands and fathers. Nobody is predestined to a perverted use of these powers”..
The Latter Day Saints movement emerged in the United States in the 19th century, at a time when other great Christian denominations of today have emerged, the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Interestingly, it is a denomination not considered Christian by several other churches, since its theology is based not only on the Bible, but on the Book of Mormon. The book is a communication between God and the inhabitants of the Americas. According to him, Jesus would have visited the continent after his resurrection.
