The Public Ministry denounced to the Justice Councilor Fernando FH (MDB), from Itararé, for saying on a social network that he wanted to make the “city more straight”, in addition to making offensive insinuations to an Internet user, calling him a “fag”. The video in which he utters these words can be seen through this link.

The MP understands that the councilor violated article 20 of law No. 7716/89, “which defines crimes resulting from racial or color prejudice, involving the issue of segregation to sexual orientation and gender identity of the LGBTQI+ group, practicing prejudice and homophobic discrimination against these people through social networks”.

The councilor’s post says: “There was a blessed fag that entered a debate on Facebook. And I lost a few minutes now of my life looking at his page. I even called him there to a small talk with me on Whatsapp… Let’s go, see you around. I’m going to try to make our city a more ‘straight’ city, with a firmer grip. Come take care off some chickens with us any day to see if you can become a thicker person, right. I won’t say anything because someone likes it, right?”.

After the negative repercussions, Fernando apologized and said that “he has always respected and will respect the diversity and freedoms guaranteed by the Federal Constitution”.

“It’s up to us to gradually correct our vocabulary and thoughts, in order to exclude from our day-to-day behaviors rooted in our upbringing and in our society. I apologize to the offended.” – he said.

HOMOPHOBIC COMMENTS DISGUISED AS A JOKE

According to the TCC “Homophobic discrimination through humour: naturalization and maintenance of heteronormativity in the organizational context”, homophobic jokes disguised as “humor” or a simple joke are directly related to the heteronormative values of a society.

This means that the more “heteronormative”, that is, the more masculine the man is (within what society teaches about being masculine) and the more feminine the woman, the more privileged the person will be and the more “normal” she will be considered in society.

If the person leaves this stereotype, he will be seen with “evil eyes”, giving rise to the mockery, which at first can be seen as a simple “innocent joke”, but which ends up being the “cradle” for more serious homophobic behaviors, such as physical and verbal violence.

The study concludes that heterosexual men with precarious beliefs use homophobic humor as a form of self-assertion of their masculinity, with sexist jokes and, in many cases, having different behaviors that need to reinforce their virility, hence common phrases such as “man does not cry ” or “a man who is a man can take it all in” or jokes related to the “role of women” in society. In more serious cases, there are men who fail to properly sanitize themselves to reinforce their male identity, leading to cases of penile amputation due to simple lack of hygiene.

The “innocent joke”, which is homophobic, ceases to be funny when the person understands that the fact that the man “is virile” or the woman “is feminine” should not be a reason for appreciation. Respect starts with accepting people for who they are, regardless of pre-established standards.
