The Curaçao LGBTQIA+ Pride Week, on the Caribbean island, started on Thursday, September 30th and runs until October 3rd. In the 2021 edition, the activities on the Week’s agenda were included in the schedule that ended up being transformed into Pride Punda Vibes. To enter the island, visitors must check the official procedures on the website www.dicardcuracao.com.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, events happen in a modified way. “Appropriate social distance rules and a maximum number of visitors, as indicated by the government, are logically being taken into account”, said the organizer Frank Holtslag.
The Curaçao Pride Organization asks business owners, foundations and individuals to raise the rainbow flag during Pride Week or to express their support for Curaçao Pride through the pages on social networks.
“By organizing the annual Curaçao Pride and raising awareness in collaboration with other foundations on the island, we hope to bring about a change in acceptance and equality”, concludes Frank.

It is worth mentioning that on September 13, 2021, the Willemstad Court of First Instance judge ruled that the current provision that marriage can only be entered into between a man and a woman is contrary to the principle of equality and prohibition of discrimination.
The decision was made in an open case filed by the human rights organization Human Rights Caribbean on behalf of two women who want to get married. The prohibition on same-sex marriage has been a topic of discussion on the island for some time. In the recent decision of the Court of First Instance were discussed legal regulations and developments with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the region and the world with regard to the theme.
