Representativeness in politics matters – and a lot. While Brazil has a shameful number of openly LGBTQI+ parliamentarians in the federal legislature, at least three, New Zealand has elected 11 homosexual representatives.
It is the gayest parliament in the world, according to the American website Advocate. In the country of Oceania, whose population is smaller than that of the city of Rio, homosexuals occupy 9% of the 120 seats in parliament. Of the 11 politicians, seven are from the Labor Party, which re-elected Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
“Numbers matter”, Louisa Wall, a labor deputy, told The Australian, according to Advocate. “We have a critical mass with high visibility and we are seen as valid. If we end up being the most representative LGBT Parliament in the world, that would be just great.”
BRAZIL BEHIND
The Brazilian Congress has at least three gays among the 594 congressmen. Senator Fabiano Contarato (Rede / ES) was elected with more than one million votes. Federal deputies Marcelo Calero (Citizenship / RJ) and David Miranda (PSOL / RJ) complete the trio.
For comparison, in the UK, gays occupy 45 of the 650 seats in parliament (7%). In Israel, they are 5% in the assembly, occupying six of the 120 seats, according to the news agency AFP.
