Josh O’Connor is tipped to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new gay romance

Josh O’Connor, known for his performances in “God’s Own Country” and “The Crown”, is in talks to star in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming drama “Separate Rooms,” an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the late Italian writer Pier Vittorio Tondelli. The news came to light when Guadagnino announced in an exclusive interview with the weekly magazine Venerdì, from the Italian La Repubblica, that the film would be in production soon.

“Separate Rooms” tells the story of Leo, an Italian writer who is dealing with the pain of losing his boyfriend The plot unfolds as Leo, played by O’Connor, travels through several European cities, meeting with and falling in love with Thomas, a talented German pianist. Their relationship is marked by physical and emotional separations, with moments of intense passion and profound loneliness.

The film’s narrative, based on Tondelli’s work originally released in 1989 in Italy, is divided into three parts, entitled “movements”, which alternate between flashbacks and reflections. The novel, known as “Camere Separate” in Italian, is a moving exploration of love, loss and the grieving process.

While O’Connor prepares to take on the role of Leo, immersing himself in studying Italian for the character, the project is still in an advanced negotiation stage. Sources close to the production say the actor is committed to the role, but contractual details are still being finalized.

“Separate Rooms” promises to be another collaboration between O’Connor and Guadagnino, whose upcoming film “Challengers” is also generating great anticipation.
