The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (36), said on Rafinha Bastos’ YouTube program “more than eight minutes” that he took a long time to accept his sexual orientation due to his creation as a child, and that he went to kiss a man for the first time only at age 25. “I, who am gay, it was difficult to accept myself, because of the creation I had. […] Some say: ‘Oh, but I should have said it at the beginning’. The first time I hooked up with a guy was when I was 25 years old, I was just discovering myself. I was raised in a culture in which I believed that this was wrong”, he told to Rafinha Bastos.
As for not putting LGBTQIA+ as a political banner, he said: “I’m not talking about it. My personal life is not an issue”. As for the criticism he received for having supported the election of President Jair Bolsonaro, Leite highlighted the strong opposition of Jean Wyllys, but that he feels solidarity with the former deputy.
“Jean was one of the most outstanding critics, but we always have to understand the pain of the other. I disagree politically, but in his fight for rights, he has been on this road for a long time and has faced even tougher times. When he sees another governor, maybe it gives him a feeling of ‘damn it, I’ve been here a lot longer and this guy arrives, with the path we opened up”, he said.
It is worth mentioning that the governor of RS also declared to CNN Brasil that he does not intend to participate in João Doria‘s campaign for the presidency of the republic in 2022, pointing out political differences, but that the decision still depends on dialogue between them and internal agreements.
“Of course, he will need to surround himself with whoever has the best synergy with him,” he replied. Despite this, João Doria said that Eduardo Leite will have a leading role in his campaign.
