Curaçao resumes in person event schedule with special programming for LGBTs

Curaçao, at the Southern Caribbean, returns to the official schedule of in-person events on the island and performs the Pride 2021 in between 09/30 and 10/03. The schedule starts with the “Punda Vibes Pride”, at 5:30 pm, where various activities will take place in the historic streets. Later, it follows with the “Rainbow Lounge” (10/01) and the White Party (10/02), both in the Landhuis Bona Vista, official mansion of the event. Completing the agenda, on Sunday (10/03), a brunch will be held at the restaurant Kome and a nautical parade through Willemstad Bay.

“We are delighted that Curaçao Pride returns this year. We’ve created a wonderful program that can be found at our website and on Facebook page”, says Frank Holtslag, president of the Curacao Pride Parade.

“We have 40 beaches and the biggest concern is which to visit during your stay. Our aim is always to promote diversity. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us. Now in this scenario with a lot of security, social distance and advance reservations”, highlights Andre Rojer, Regional Manager for South America at the Curaçao Tourism Office.

Gay Marriage

A recent theme stirred up the local press and should be celebrated during the Pride Curaçao 2021, it’s the same-sex marriage. On September 13, 2021, the judge of the Court of First Instance in Willemstad ruled that the current provision, as provided for in the Curaçao constitution, that marriage can only be entered into between a man and a woman is contrary to the principle of equality and the prohibition of discrimination. The decision was made in an open case presented by the organization Human Rights Caribbean on behalf of two women who wish to marry.

The prohibition on same-sex marriage has been a topic of discussion on the island for some time. In the recent decision of the Court of First Instance, legal regulations and developments with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the region and the world regarding the subject were discussed. According to the judge, the current impediment is not only unconstitutional, but also goes against the spirit friendly of the Caribbean island. The sentence is, therefore, a step towards the emancipation of LGBTQIA+ people and an asset for the entire community and minority living in Curaçao.
