A bill that recognizes the same-sex civil union in Serbia has been made official, which is considered a small step for the LGBTQIA+ community in the European country. The information is from UOL Notícias.

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said in public that she is a lesbian in 2016, but as with many patriarchal Balkan societies, the community still cannot be free to express its affection and society is considered homotransphobic.

According to a survey published in 2020 by human rights NGOs IDEAS and GLIC, almost 60% of LGBTQIA+ claim to have suffered physical, or emotional, violence over a 12-month period. In addition, only 24% of high school students consulted for a Helsinki committee survey say they support LGBT rights, such as adoption.

“The text did not cause much controversy, but until recently, the minimum advance of the gay community generated waves of violence, such as the attacks against the Gay Pride Parade in 2010, or the tense confrontations with the police in 2012 on the occasion of a photographic exhibition. In it, Jesus was represented as a transgender person. “ – says the story.

In Serbia, the Serbian Orthodox Church has a great influence on society and they are opposed to LGBT issues, going so far as to classify Belgrade Pride as a “march of shame”. However, his new boss, Patriarch Porfirije, declared his empathy for LGBTQIA+, and is also considered another small step towards a change in society.

“I can understand people with this type of sexual orientation, their countless administrative problems, the challenges and pressures, and their need to regularize their situation” – he explained recently.

COMO É SER LGBTQIA+ NA SÉRVIA?

There, there are laws that protect discrimination against LGBTI people since the 2000s, such as one in 2002 that prevented the media from promoting discrimination, hatred or violence against sexual orientation; another from 2005 that prohibited discrimination in the workplace; as well as laws that guarantee sex change operations by the public sector.

Despite these advances, Serbia’s social conditions are not very favorable to LGBTQIA+, facing a lot of marginalization and harassment. For years, Belgrade’s LGBT pride parade has been canceled in the face of threats of violence.
