During his visit to São Luís, in Maranhão, President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) made a homophobic joke while drinking a glass of Guaraná Jesus, typical of the state.
After taking a few sips of the pink drink, he said: “Now I’m going to become a fag. Just like Maranhão, is that it?” -said- “Guaraná pink from Maranhão there, whoever takes this guaraná here becomes Maranhão” – he continued. In another moment, he goes back to “joking”: “Pink Guarana …. fuc@ …. fuc@ ….”.
In addition to the homophobic joke, Bolsonaro was also criticized for being in the middle of a large crowd of people and without wearing a mask, as the World Health Organization recommends. The president was in São Luís to participate in the inauguration of a stretch of the BR-135 highway.
HOMOPHOBIC COMMENTS DISGUISED FOR PLAY
According to the TCC “Homophobic discrimination through humor: naturalization and maintenance of heteronormativity in the organizational context”, homophobic jokes like that of Jair Bolsonaro, which are disguised as “humor” or a simple joke are directly related to the heteronormative values taught to society .
This means that the more “heteronormative” you are, that is, the more masculine the man is (within what society teaches what it is to be masculine) and the more feminine the woman is, the more privileged the person will be and the more “normal” it will be considered in society.
If the person leaves this stereotype, they will be seen with “bad eyes”, resulting in the joke, which at the beginning can be seen as a simple “innocent game”, but that ends up being the “cradle” for more aggressive homophobic behaviors, such as physical and verbal violence.
Heterosexual men with precarious beliefs use homophobic humor as a way of self-affirmation of his masculinity, using sexist jokes and, in many cases, having different behaviors that need to reinforce his virility, hence common phrases such as “man does not cry” or “man who is a man can take it all”, or jokes related to ” role of women ”in society.
In more serious cases, there are men who fail to properly clean themselves to reinforce their male identity, leading to cases of penile amputation due to simple lack of hygiene. The “innocent game”, which is homophobic, ceases to be funny when the person understands that the fact that the man “is virile” or the woman “is feminine” should not be a reason for appreciation.
Respect begins with the acceptance of people as they are, regardless of pre-established standards. The most effeminate men are not on a “smaller” hierarchical scale when compared to the more masculine.
