The Cartoon Network invited Steven Universe non-binary author Rebecca Sugar to a series of special episodes aimed at children with anti-discriminatory messages, addressing issues such as racism and LGBT phobia. The information came from the Pink News website.

The first short came on the 27th of October and is called “Don’t Deny It, Defy It”, showing two boys of different ethnicities playing, and one of them says: “When we are older, we are going to get married!”, And a third child appears and says: “You can’t marry, blacks can’t marry whites!”. At that moment Garnet appears and explains: “Children! Don’t be racist”.

Throughout the short, Garnet also explains to the children that in order to fight against racism it is necessary to know the subject. Besides, one of the characters ends up being a little skeptical if racism happened in “real life”, and the Steven Universe character says that even if the person says that he never had an experience of racism, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist, endorsed by the other character.

“Everyone makes mistakes sometimes” – says one of the boys – “but you must realize that it hurts to deal with racism, and when people act as if it is not real, it gets even worse” – he adds.

Steven Universe is very popular with children and teenagers and presents several characters that do not fit in heteronormativity, including non-binaries, lesbians, gays, in addition to the protagonist being a hero who knows how to use emotional intelligence to solve problems.

In the fifth season of the animation, released in 2018, the characters Ruby and Shippire get married, even though they don’t have a defined genre. At the time, Rebecca Sugar said their marriage was inevitable: “We needed to show, over and over, that there was nothing less healthy in these two characters than in any other animated wedding ever shown on Cartoon Network.”
