Religious leaders ask for the end of the “gay cure” and laws against LGBTQIA+ rights

Last December 15th, 400 religious global leaders signed a joined declaration in which they ask for the end of legal restrictions to LGBTQIA+ and the end of “conversion therapy” (gay cure) all over the world. The signatures were organized by the charity institution Ozanne Foundation, including Christians, Jewish, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, and Mulsims.

According to the Irish former president Mary McAleese, prominent member of Roman Catholic Church, the joined declaration represents “a small step to fight homophobia”, but that this is “a necessary step to remember the religious systems of the world and faithful people that they have an obligation with the citizens, that also have rights to the full dignity of their humanity and full equality of human rights”.

The declaration says that there is a “deep regret” that the religious teachings over the centuries “caused and continue to cause deep pain and offense to those who are lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queer and intersex”.

69 United Nation countries still have laws against LGBTs according to the report “State Homophobia 2020”, shown by IGLA. Only Brazil, Ecuador, Malta, Germany and Mexicoinstituted ways of national prohibition of conversion therapy.

GAY CURE, WHY IS IT FORBIDDEN?

According to the video “Is there a Gay Cure?“ of Nerdologia, there are a lot of our characteristics that we want to change and that are not necessarily sicknesses, saying that a wrinkle in the forehead, for example, will be hardly considered a sickness by society, but the person can look for a plastic surgeon to apply botox and get rid of it.

According to this, a person can know that homosexuality is not a sickness and even so, because of beliefs and moral values, he or she wants to get out of this condition, because it is a suffering reason. That is, the person is attracted to people of the same sex, but wishes to be attracted to the opposite sex.

Ignoring the fact those that renounce their sexual wish because of a heteronormative life under the religious argument that “this is the right thing”, a scientific study published in 2008 by Ohio State University with University of Minnessota, evaluated all of the attempts of therapy published in the last fifty years, including individual or group psychotherapy, electroconvulsive treatment, nausea or vomit induction, hypnosis, and orgasm reorientation.

All attempts failedto reorient the patients’ sexual desire, causing an increase in the number of profound depressions, social dysfunctions, suicidal thoughts, and other psychological damages. The study also concluded that these attempts had no theoretical foundation, had serious methodological flaws and violated ethical principles and human rights.

Another study published on Professional Psychology: Research and Practice 33, did an interview with more than 200 patients that have gone through the sexual reorientation therapy. Out of those, only 46 stated that the therapy helped and only 9 said that they have come to want the opposite sex. About the rest, the psychological damages were the same that were mentioned previously.

The hypothesis tests indicate that, just like heterosexuals don’t change their sexual orientation due to the presence of gay people (that is, there is nothing that makes someone want a person of the same sex), homosexuals also don’t turn straight.

The conclusion is that there are no methods to reorient a person’s sexual desire since homosexuality is another one of the variations in nature. Besides that, gay people who look for help for suffering from their condition stop suffering when they accepttheir homosexuality and are no longer persecuted by those around them.

What ends suffering is acceptance, not reorientation.
