Video game company SEGA has announced on its Japanese fanpage that it is sponsoring the traditional Tokyo Rainbow Pride parade. Visual communication on social media has been changed with the colors of the rainbow.
“Tokyo’s Rainbow Pride event aims at a society that can live positively, without discrimination or prejudice. We are supporting the event again.” – says the text, in free translation.
The Tokyo Rainbow Pride is taking place this weekend in person, as there they have managed to contain the advance of the Covid-19 pandemic. As with the LGBT+ Pride parades around the world, the Tokyo one aims to fight for the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights, with several events taking place across the Japanese capital.
According to the official Tokyo Rainbow Pride website, an estimated 7,6% of the country’s population is LGBTQIA+. In addition to SEGA, several other companies are sponsoring the event, including the Brazilian Havaianas and Disney.
It is worth mentioning that SEGA is considered one of the companies that most support LGBTs within the gaming world, taking a favorable position both in its social media and in the content of its games.
In 2019, during the re-release of the Yakuza game, SEGA decided to remove content that could be considered homophobic present in the original game.

According to the series’ producer, Daisuke Sato, when talking to the MCV channel, the thinking of ten years ago is very different from today: “There are technical problems [a serem corrigidos], but there are also contents that need to be modified because they don’t apply to modern thinking. The [de Yakuza] first game is already ten years old, and at that time the perception of the LGBTQ community was different from today.”
Japan is the only member of G7 (a group consisting of the most industrialized countries in the world, composed of Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan and United Kingdom) that still doesn’t recognize homoaffective marriages, which has caused difficulties for couples to rent an apartment or have basic rights. In October of last year, they created the first large community center for the LGBT+ population.
