Mapping of the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (ANTRA), updated this Wednesday, shows that 275 trans and transvestites are in the electoral dispute this year, across the country. The number is 209% higher than in 2016, when 89 candidates applied and 8 were elected.
Of the total applications, 250 are for transvestites and trans women, 15 for trans men and ten candidates have other trans identities.
The majority dispute seats for the legislature – only 3 registered candidacies for positions of mayor or vice. Psychoanalyst Letícia Lanz, for example, runs for the city of Curitiba (PR) through PSOL.
The Southeast region has the majority of applications (116), 63 of which are in the state of São Paulo alone. The Northeast has 77 candidates, followed by the South (30), Midwest (26) and North (26).
The growth in candidacies is the result of the organization and struggle of social movements, according to an ANTRA report. However, the association emphasizes that the dispute “is still a complicated path, since most applications are submitted for the first time, and we know that politics always excels for those who have experiences. This does not mean that the trans population is at a disadvantage, they are not”.
SOCIAL NAME
This is the first year that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) allows the registration of the social name in the ballot box, which was requested by 167 people.
ANTRA identified in this list the use of the social name by seven cisgender people – the use is exclusive for trans people.
“It is important for the TSE to establish stricter rules and that the social name fulfills its role with trans people and only these people”, demands the organization.
PARTIES
Although left-wing parties are home to most trans and transvestite candidates, they are not hegemonic. The right and the center hold 49% of the applications (134), compared to 51% of the left (141).
PT leads in the number of candidates (43), followed by PSOL (27), and PDT (22), among others. On the right, there is a greater distribution of applications: 15 are in the MDB, for example.
