Swiss professional basketball player Marco Lehmann, who is considered the second best in his country, explained that he is gay in an article from FIBA, the official website of the International Basketball Federation, explaining that he could not wait until he retired to reveal who he is.
“This is for all people who do not want to live a double life anymore, those who live in a system where they do not exist” – he said Lehmann. “This is for future generations so that they can live without hiding. They will not lie, and that goes for me, to release me from this burden”.
Over the years, Lehmann has played in several competitions in more than twenty countries. Until then, when he was asked about his private life, he said he didn’t have a girlfriend because he was focusing on his career. Even with so much fame in the sport, he says in the article that he was not happy.
“I have been changing personalities until now, and it was affecting my mental health. Every week it was always the same: my boyfriend drove me to the airport and the moment I passed through security, the gay man happy in his relationship he became an emotionless athlete, who didn’t want to talk to anyone about his private life. ” – said the professional basketball player.
He also says he was slow to “come out of the closet” because he suffered homophobia from other players and coaches, who constantly reinforced the fact that being gay was a problem in sports. A coach once said that the team was “playing like gays” in a derogatory way, and a teammate has said that homosexuality is a disease.
“[Eu ouvi que homossexuais] should kill themselves” – he says – “Imagine you have to play with someone like that on your team?”. With information from Pink News.
