“I’m gay, it’s part of me and I’m proud of it.”

Hig Roberts officially declared himself gay in a new in-depth interview for The New York Times, according to the Gay Times website. The United States ski champion opened up about his journey and what inspired him to take over.

“Not being able to be who I am and not being openly gay as a professional athlete was really hampering my performance”, said Roberts The 29-year-old athlete became the first male alpine skier of his caliber to come out publicly as a gay man.

Roberts expressed that the hyper-masculine environment of the sport prevented him from manifesting, stating: “There is this idea that being a professional skier in Europe you are attracting the attention of women and you are almost a little bigger than life.”

Speaking of the exact moment that triggered his decision, he said that he just “woke up one morning and said ‘Enough.'”

“I love this sport more than anything – I’m so lucky and privileged to do that – but I can’t go another day without trying to reach the person I should be. I think that for each of us, one of the main goals must be happiness and authenticity ”, he continued.

Roberts is now part of the growing community of LGBTQ+ athletes that includes Gus Kenworthy, Adam Rippon, Anja Pärson, Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird and more.

Looking to the future, Roberts is ready to take on the world and live his life freely, saying: “I’m gay, it’s part of me and I’m proud of it, and I’m ready to be happy”.
