Thailand bans access to Pornhub and population revolt

The Thai government banned, on November 3, access to pornographic channels, such as Pornhub, generating revolt in the population on social networks. According to the Minister of Digital Affairs, Puttipong Punnakanta, the blockade was made to restrict access to porn and gambling sites, which are illegal in the country. In response, many Thais spoke out against the decision and made the hashtag #SavePornhub, becoming one of Twitter’s trending topics. The activist group “Partido Anonymous” spoke on the subject: “We want to claim Pornhub. People have the right to choose”.

According to PornHub itself, Thais spent more time on the site last year than anywhere else in the world: 11 minutes and 21 seconds, on average.

The most popular searches on the site are related to games, and the “fever” of the moment in relation to this subject, “Among Us” is one of the most searched terms in recent times, with about 4.7 million searches. These searches emerged from September 1, which is the period when the game started to gain more popularity on streaming platforms.

It is worth remembering that Pornhub was one of the first channels to release premium subscription in several countries for free, including Brazil, when the pandemic started, being an “incentive” for people to stay at home. At the time, the official statement said:

“To have company during those weeks at home, you will receive free access to Pornhub Premium throughout the month, without the need for a credit card”, they said. “Pornhub decided to donate its percentage of profits for the month of March on the Modelhub platform to help Italy during this emergency.”

“With nearly a billion people trapped worldwide thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, it is important that we help and provide a pleasant way to pass the time” – said Corey Prince, vice president of Pornhub, in a statement in the New York Post.
