The international reaction to the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, has been marked by different approaches in the foreign press and outlets aimed at the LGBTQ+ audience. Coverage generally revolves around three points: unprecedented visibility, political debate, and questions about representation.

His public declaration of his sexual orientation, made in 2021, received widespread attention outside Brazil. The Guardian described the event as a milestone, noting that the then-presidential hopeful “announced that he is gay”, something they said was rare in a conservative political environment.

Them magazine also highlighted the novelty, noting that Leite is the first openly gay governor in the country, as well as a potential presidential candidate in that capacity. The outlet also drew attention to the way he defines his identity in office, stating that he is “a governor who is gay, not a gay governor”.

In Europe, the Italian portal GAY.IT analyzed the political impact of his presence in electoral contests. According to the site, a gay candidate in the center could influence electoral scenarios and “complicate the calculations of the far right”, as well as affect races involving figures such as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.

Positive reaction linked to representation

Part of the international press linked the declaration to a moment of heightened political and social tension. Reuters highlighted that the announcement came amid the rise of hostile rhetoric toward the LGBTQ+ population. According to them, the visibility of an openly gay governor could help broaden the debate on diversity in Brazilian politics and influence new generations.

Criticism and debate over political consistency

On the other hand, not all the coverage was positive. Them magazine itself reported criticism from LGBTQ+ activists, who questioned Leite’s political consistency, especially due to his previous support for former president Jair Bolsonaro, known for statements considered homophobic.

This type of questioning appears recurrently in international coverage, which combines recognition of the symbolic importance of the declaration with doubts about the politician’s actual commitment to LGBTQ+ issues.

Accusations of exploiting identity

In more opinionated analyses, such as those published by the site openDemocracy, more direct criticism emerges. Some articles use the term “pinkwashing” to suggest a possible political use of his sexual orientation, although this stance is not predominant.

Overall, the international press has constructed a narrative that encompasses three main dimensions: the historic nature of the declaration, the increased visibility of LGBTQ+ people in Brazilian politics, and debates over consistency and political positioning.
